The order directs federal agencies to replace “Lake Ontario” with “Lake America” in geographic records and official materials, subject to law and available funding.
Federal agencies must rename Lake Ontario as Lake America, update the national geographic database, and use the new name on maps, contracts, and other official materials.
The Secretary of the Interior and the Board on Geographic Names must rename Lake Ontario as Lake America in federal geographic records. This covers the lake bordered by New York on the south and east and by Ontario, Canada, on the north, west, and southwest. The actions must follow the federal geographic-naming law. The order does not change agencies' legal authority or the budget duties of the Office of Management and Budget. Implementation is subject to applicable law and available funding. The order creates no enforceable right or benefit. Within 30 days after August 27, 2026, the Interior Secretary must take appropriate renaming actions. Later, federal geographic records and references must be updated.
