Tennessee defines nine congressional districts with county and census lines
Tennessee law assigns areas to nine U.S. House districts, using counties, voting areas, and census blocks to describe their boundaries.
1
What it does
Tennessee law describes nine U.S. House districts using counties and smaller 2020 census areas. Some counties are divided between districts.
If a listed area is found cut off from the rest of its district, it goes to the connected district with the fewest people. A water connection counts.
Argument forThe rule for isolated areas could help keep each congressional district connected if a listed area is found cut off.
Argument againstDividing some counties and voting areas by census block may make it harder for residents to tell which district covers their home.
More detail
Tennessee law assigns areas to nine U.S. House districts. The district descriptions cover Tennessee, including parts of counties divided between districts. The boundaries use 2020 federal census geography. Where a county is split, the law lists voting areas and, when needed, census blocks. The district descriptions took effect on May 7, 2026, when the governor signed the act.
The law assigns an isolated area to the connected district with the fewest people. This applies when a listed voting area or other geographic piece is found cut off from the rest of its district. A connection across water counts. The area must go to a district it touches. This rule took effect when the act became law.
