New Jersey landlords would be barred from evicting tenants for housing certain family members whose removal could threaten either person's access to stable, safe, affordable housing.
Landlords could not evict tenants or certain family members for living together if removing the family member could leave either person unable to find stable, decent, safe, and affordable housing.
Landlords would be barred from using a covered family living arrangement as grounds to evict the tenant, the family member, or both. The protection would cover New Jersey renters housing spouses, civil union partners, or listed close and extended relatives, including certain in-laws and step-relatives. Removing the family member must risk leaving that person, the tenant, or both unable to obtain stable occupancy of a decent, safe, and affordable home. The protection would take effect immediately if the bill becomes law.
