Starting with 2027 tax years, eligible parents could have an extra $2,000 health savings account deposit allowance once per child born to them, placed for adoption, or adopted. Children must be under 18 at year’s end, and married couples share the limit.
For tax years starting in 2028 or later, the $2,000 allowance and married couples’ shared limit would be adjusted for inflation.
Eligible parents could make extra deposits into health savings accounts. The child must be born to, placed for adoption with, or adopted by the parent before year’s end and be under 18 then. Married spouses eligible in any month that year could choose how to split the shared $2,000 limit. No allowance would apply if the parent or their spouse was allowed it for that child in an earlier tax year, even if unused. The allowance would apply to tax years beginning after December 31, 2026.
The dollar limits would be adjusted for inflation. The adjustment would cover both the per-child allowance and the combined limit for married couples. The calculation would use calendar year 2026 as its starting point. Inflation adjustments would apply to tax years beginning after 2027.
