New Jersey hospitals and their systems could open acute care facilities with up to 50 beds, subject to a distance rule for most new sites.
Licensed general acute care hospitals or their systems could open micro-hospitals with up to 50 beds; surgery would be optional. The five-mile limit near an unrelated hospital would not apply when an existing hospital is converted, restructured, or made smaller.
A licensed general acute care hospital or its hospital system could establish a micro-hospital. A micro-hospital would have no more than 50 acute care beds. A surgery center without a general acute care hospital license could not establish one. A micro-hospital could not be within five miles of an unrelated licensed general acute care hospital unless an existing hospital is converted, restructured, or made smaller. It would not need operating rooms or surgery services. A converted hospital would keep its general acute care hospital license. The measure would take effect immediately if enacted.
