If lawmakers advance it and voters approve, New Jersey’s governor would need both legislative chambers’ approval before an appointed lieutenant governor takes office.
If voters approve the amendment, the governor’s choice to fill a lieutenant governor vacancy would need a majority vote in each legislative chamber before taking office.
The governor’s appointee would take office only after a majority vote of approval in each legislative chamber. This would apply to people appointed to fill a vacancy as New Jersey’s lieutenant governor. Lawmakers must first advance the constitutional amendment, and voters must approve it. The public would vote at the next general election occurring more than three months after lawmakers’ final agreement.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
