Employers could ask Michigan’s unemployment agency to continue waiving job search duties for workers laid off temporarily for listed reasons, including severe weather.
For listed extended temporary layoffs, the agency may continue waiving claimants’ work search and related duties while they wait to return to work.
The unemployment insurance agency may extend a claimant’s waiver of work search and related duties for an extended temporary layoff. The waiver applies to claimants laid off temporarily when their employer expects work to be available within the stated period. The employer must notify the agency before the current waiver period ends and attest in writing or by computer data exchange that the layoff is extended and results from equipment retooling, a parts shortage, a temporary production adjustment, or weather conditions. The extension may bring the total waiver period to no more than 135 calendar days. The employer must notify the agency before the current waiver period ends.
