Federal teacher loan forgiveness and cancellation would cover qualifying K–12 teachers who provide English-language, bilingual, or dual-language instruction. This covers public or nonprofit private school teachers and educational service agency teachers whose main responsibility is teaching English learners, or who teach bilingual or dual-language immersion classes. Teachers must meet the requirements referenced in the applicable loan program. The appropriate school or agency leader must certify that the teacher serves students matching the teacher’s training and has shown knowledge and teaching skill in the subjects taught. The provisions would take effect upon enactment and apply to people eligible for teacher loan forgiveness or cancellation after that date.
