New Jersey would develop designs for independent living units on the same lot as a primary home. At least 10 commissioner-approved designs would count as meeting state construction rules and be posted online for free.
The Department of Community Affairs would run a program to develop accessory home designs and submit them for the commissioner's approval. The designs are for independent living units for one or more people on the same lot as a primary home. A unit may be inside, attached to, or separate from that home. The commissioner must approve a design before it counts as pre-vetted and compliant with the State Uniform Construction Code Act. At least 10 designs must be approved and made available online at no cost. The act would take effect immediately if enacted. The commissioner would appoint a coordinator within one month after enactment; by the first day of the sixth month, the coordinator must develop and submit designs for approval.
