Washington school districts skipping vehicle replacements can seek state approval to move replacement payments and interest to another fund once the vehicles finish their depreciation period.
Districts shrinking their fleets by skipping replacements can seek state approval to use vehicle replacement payments and interest elsewhere. The vehicles must have completed their depreciation period.
School districts may ask the state superintendent of public instruction to approve moving vehicle replacement payments and earned interest into another district fund. This applies when changing student numbers or transportation needs lead a district to shrink its fleet by skipping vehicle replacements. The money must come from a fully depreciated vehicle, meaning its cost has finished being spread over its depreciation period. The state superintendent must approve the request if projected enrollment declines or other relevant transportation factors make the fleet reduction appropriate. Transfers to other district funds are prohibited unless they meet this exception. The law took effect on June 11, 2026.
