Older tax-relief recipients could reapply with less paperwork
The text would let qualifying property-tax relief recipients age 85 and older continue without a full application or income report, subject to the program’s other requirements.
1
What it does
People age 85 and older who have received property-tax relief for at least five years could continue without a full application or income report, if they still meet all eligibility rules.
Argument forOlder recipients may face less paperwork because they could confirm their eligibility with a simpler mail or online reapplication.
Argument againstAssessors may have less income documentation to review because eligible recipients would not report income, even though they must still meet the income limit.
More detail
Eligible taxpayers would not have to submit a complete application or report income to continue receiving property-tax relief. This applies to taxpayers age 85 or older who have received property-tax relief for at least five consecutive years. Annual income must not exceed the adjusted income limit in the property-tax relief law. Taxpayers must still meet all other eligibility requirements that are not based on income. The state board of equalization would create a simplified reapplication process by mail or online, using checkboxes for the required statements. The provision would take effect when the act becomes law and would apply to continued participation in the relief program.
