Beginning November 1, 2026, electricians whose licenses have been expired for over a year may seek reinstatement by retesting or meeting listed requirements.
Electricians with licenses expired for more than a year cannot renew them, but may seek reinstatement by retesting or meeting requirements that include a $200 fee and, in some cases, extra classes.
Electricians who pass their current licensing exam are exempt from renewal continuing education requirements for three years.
Apprentice registrations last one year, while student apprentice registrations last for the school year; both may be renewed if board requirements are met and the fee is paid.
A license expired for more than one year cannot be renewed; its former holder may seek reinstatement by retesting or meeting the listed requirements. This applies to a former license holder whose license has been expired for more than one year. The former holder must meet all license requirements and submit the Board's application. The application must include the standard renewal fee, a $200 reinstatement fee, and proof about disciplinary actions and relevant criminal convictions. For the option that avoids retesting, the applicant must provide proof of approved continuing education completed in the prior 12 months. If the applicant met renewal education requirements in the prior 36 months, no additional education is required; after more than 36 months, 12 hours are required for each full 36-month period expired, up to 24 hours. The reinstatement process applies once a license has been expired for more than one year.
A licensee is exempt from renewal continuing education requirements for three years after passing their current licensing exam. The exemption applies to licensees who have passed their current licensing exam. The three-year exemption begins on the date the licensee passes the current exam.
An apprentice registration certificate lasts one year; a student apprentice certificate lasts for the registrant's school year. Each may be renewed by reregistering. These terms apply to apprentice and student apprentice registration certificates. Reregistration requires meeting Construction Industries Board requirements and paying the renewal fee. A student apprentice registration expires on the last day of the registrant's school year.
