The Department of Education calculates and publishes attendance figures for school districts and public charter schools four times a year, after giving each school time to review them.
The department must explain on its website how its method for measuring attendance in 2026–2027 differs from the method used the year before.
The Department of Education calculates and publishes attendance figures four times each calendar year. The figures include total student counts and percentages for regular attenders and students who are chronically absent, with results broken out by student group. The figures cover students enrolled in the district or public charter school for at least 10 days during the reporting period. Before publication, each district and public charter school gets at least 15 business days to review the figures and request adjustments under state board rules. The department must explain how it defines regular attendance and chronic absence, whether it changed its method, and limits on comparing the figures. The duty becomes operative July 1, 2026. Reporting and data compilation first apply to the 2026–2027 school year.
The Department of Education posts a description of attendance-method changes for the 2026–2027 school year. The description compares the method for deciding whether students are regular attenders or chronically absent with the method used for the 2025–2026 school year. The comparison covers the 2026–2027 school year and the 2025–2026 school year.
