Local governments may pass a local law tying planning commissioners’ terms to those of the officials who recommended them. The option covers city and county planning commissions in counties with fewer than 700,000 residents. The law’s explanation identifies these as all Nevada counties except Clark County. The city or county must pass an ordinance, meaning a local law, to use this option. If the recommending official resigns early, the commissioner may serve until that office is next filled by election. If the official’s seat becomes vacant early for another reason, the commissioner may serve through the official’s original term. The term-setting provision takes effect on July 1, 2029.
Covered planning commissions and other entities must submit annual reports to the regional planning commission and its governing board by October 1. The duty covers local commissions responsible for city or county master plans and other covered entities in counties with at least 100,000 but fewer than 700,000 residents, identified as Washoe County. Reports must cover actions that help carry out the regional plan during the previous fiscal year and work proposed for the next fiscal year. This reporting provision took effect on January 1, 2026.
