Covered firefighters must get employer-paid cancer checks when coverage starts and annually while employed. State Executive Department firefighters are excluded, and some tests have age or medical exceptions.
Covered emergency workers outside the state government’s Executive Department must receive detailed health exams. Employers generally pay, but first-time volunteer applicants age 50 or older may initially pay for heart-coverage exams.
Covered firefighters must get cancer screenings, and their employers must pay for them. This covers Nevada firefighters outside the state government’s Executive Department and volunteer firefighters who are to receive work-related cancer coverage. When possible, a licensed doctor or advanced practice nurse familiar with firefighting and police work must conduct the screening. Tests depend on age, sex, and past testing. A colonoscopy is required at age 45 or older if none was performed in the immediately preceding 10 years. Women may skip mammograms or Pap tests with written medical certification that the test was done, unnecessary, or not recommended during the 12 months immediately preceding their last cancer screening. These requirements took effect July 1, 2026. Screenings are also required upon hiring if the employer provides them.
Required physical exams must include broad health checks, including hearing tests, blood tests, and heart tests. These standards cover firefighters, volunteer firefighters, arson investigators, and police officers receiving required exams for work-related lung or heart disease coverage outside the state government’s Executive Department. When possible, a licensed doctor or advanced practice nurse familiar with firefighting and police work must conduct the exam. A heart stress test is required at age 40 or older or if a resting heart test shows abnormalities. At age 40 or older, a scan for calcium in heart arteries is required if none was performed in the immediately preceding three years. A volunteer fire chief may require first-time applicants age 50 or older to pay for heart-coverage exams. The department must reimburse applicants found fit who join. These examination standards took effect July 1, 2026.
