Nevada law bars the corrections director from collecting department medical debt after a person leaves prison, unless that person returns to custody.
When someone leaves prison, the corrections director must stop collecting medical debt owed to the department and may not report it to a consumer reporting agency. Collection efforts may resume if the person returns to custody.
The corrections director must not collect department medical debt from a person upon release or report information about that debt to a consumer reporting agency. This applies to people released when their prison sentence ends, or by pardon or parole. If the person returns to the department's custody, the director may continue collection efforts while the person is in custody. The law took effect July 1, 2025. It also applies to people released before that date.
