Starting July 1, 2027, facilities seeking Medicaid payment for recovery care must follow Nevada’s care model and keep qualified, specially trained health care providers on duty around the clock.
Nevada Medicaid must cover medical respite care, meaning medical care and support for recovery outside an inpatient facility. People must be homeless, transient, or at imminent risk of homelessness. They must be unable to fully recover from an illness, injury, or disease but not need hospital or other inpatient care. Coverage depends on available federal funding and is limited to 90 days during any 12-month period. Nevada’s Department of Health and Human Services must seek any federal permission or Medicaid plan change needed to receive that funding. Covered services include medical treatment, food and housing support, and transportation to medical appointments. The coverage requirement takes effect July 1, 2027. Preparatory work is authorized upon passage and approval.
Nevada’s health care financing and public health divisions must develop a care model. Facilities seeking Medicaid payment must follow it and have qualified health care providers on duty around the clock. The facility rules apply to providers seeking Medicaid payment for medical respite care. The model must follow National Institute for Medical Respite Care standards unless they conflict with federal or state law. Providers must receive training in care that accounts for trauma, calming tense situations, and initial help with mental health and substance use crises. Preparatory work is authorized upon passage and approval. The care model and facility requirements otherwise take effect July 1, 2027.
