Starting July 1, 2026, prisoners may use revised sentence-credit rules, and those with earlier crimes can choose them after receiving a written estimate.
Good behavior earns credits equal to 35 percent of a prison sentence’s minimum and maximum terms. The Director may allow up to 90 extra days each year for exceptional service.
A prisoner sentenced for a crime committed before July 1, 2026, may choose these credit rules. Before the choice, the Department must provide a written estimate comparing credits under both systems.
The Department may commit the remaining system-integration money through June 30, 2027, and spend it through September 17, 2027. Any money left must return to the state general fund.
The law provides sentence credits for good behavior and allows the Director to award extra credits for exceptional service. The rules cover people serving prison sentences and calculate credits against minimum and maximum terms. Good-behavior credits against minimum terms do not apply to people convicted of specified violent felonies, felony sex offenses, certain felony driving offenses, or category A or B felonies. The Director may allow up to 90 extra days each year for exceptional service. The rules take effect for all purposes on July 1, 2026.
The Department must give a prisoner a written comparison of estimated credits before the prisoner elects to use the rules. A person sentenced for a crime committed before July 1, 2026, may elect to use these rules. The election is irrevocable and applies to credits against both minimum and maximum terms. The election provisions take effect for all purposes on July 1, 2026.
The law allows the Department of Corrections to commit and spend the remaining tracking-system appropriation through set dates, then requires it to return any balance. This applies to the $1,436,720 set aside for integrating the sentence management system into Nevada’s offender tracking system. The Department may not commit funds after June 30, 2027. Spending ends September 17, 2027, and any remaining money must be returned by then.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
