Starting July 1, 2026, Nevada school districts and charter schools may provisionally hire some teachers licensed elsewhere, while state rules cover certain school staff roles.
A school district or charter school may hire a teacher licensed in another state while the teacher’s Nevada application is pending, if the teacher meets the stated requirements.
Rules must let some career and technical education applicants count previously listed work experience or a license, and let school employees studying to become counselors complete required field hours while working.
A licensed nurse or social worker may serve in the matching school role while awaiting an endorsement, if Commission rules allow it and the person meets the stated requirements.
The State Board of Education cannot disapprove regulations adopted by the Commission on Professional Standards in Education.
A school district or charter school may hire a qualifying out-of-state teacher provisionally. This applies to teachers hired by Nevada school districts and charter schools. The teacher must hold a teaching license in good standing from another state, have applied for a Nevada teaching license, and meet the other stated requirements. The job must match the out-of-state license, and the person must not otherwise be barred from teaching in Nevada. The provisional job may last up to one year. The school must report the hire to the state when it happens.
The Commission on Professional Standards in Education must adopt rules for certain career and technical education applicants and public school employees preparing to become school counselors. These rules concern career and technical education endorsements and public school employees enrolled in programs leading to school counselor licenses or endorsements. The rules must let applicants use certain work experience or a career and technical education license to meet endorsement requirements if they previously listed that information on an application for a license that is no longer valid. The rules must let qualifying public school employees complete required school counseling internship or practicum hours while working in support roles. The law takes effect July 1, 2026. The text sets no separate deadline for adopting these rules.
The Commission must adopt rules allowing some licensed nurses and social workers to serve in school roles while their endorsement applications are pending. This covers people serving as school nurses or school social workers while their matching endorsement applications are pending. A school nurse must have applied for a school nurse endorsement and hold a valid registered nurse license from the State Board of Nursing. A school social worker must have applied for that endorsement and hold a valid social worker license from the Board of Examiners for Social Workers. The rules must require a school district to report each hire to the state when it happens. The law takes effect July 1, 2026. The permission applies while the endorsement application is pending.
The State Board of Education may no longer disapprove regulations adopted by the Commission. This concerns regulations adopted by the Commission on Professional Standards in Education. The repeal takes effect July 1, 2026.
