If enacted, New Jersey would give districts added transportation aid when eligible nonpublic school students outnumber eligible public school students.
Districts with more eligible nonpublic students than eligible public students would receive added state transportation aid. The payment would cover half the per-student cost gap, or the full gap when the nonpublic count is at least 25 percent higher.
The state would give eligible districts additional transportation aid. The counts compare regular nonpublic school students eligible for transportation with regular education public school students eligible for transportation under state law. When eligible nonpublic students outnumber eligible public students by less than 25 percent, the added aid would be half the per-student difference between existing state aid and the actual cost of transporting eligible nonpublic students, multiplied by the number of eligible nonpublic students. When eligible nonpublic students outnumber eligible public students by 25 percent or more, the added aid would be the full per-student difference, multiplied by the number of eligible nonpublic students. The bill would take effect immediately if enacted. Aid would apply in a school year when the eligibility-count test is met.
