New Jersey drivers could get special American Red Cross plates for registered vehicles, with added fees supporting disaster relief and other human services.
New Jersey drivers could apply for special American Red Cross plates for registered vehicles. The application adds $50 to other vehicle registration fees.
Drivers would pay an extra $10 each year after getting the plates. After the Commission’s costs are covered, the fees would support Red Cross disaster relief and other human services.
The Motor Vehicle Commission would issue special American Red Cross plates to applicants who apply properly. The plates would be available for any motor vehicle owned or leased and registered in New Jersey. Applicants must pay an added $50 fee.
The Commission would collect a $10 annual renewal fee and place the added fees in a state fund for the American Red Cross, after reimbursing its own costs. The $10 renewal fee applies each year after the year the plate is issued. The fund would pay the American Red Cross for disaster relief and other human services after reimbursing the Commission for reasonable, actual costs. The Commission may stop issuing the plates if its average cost per plate is greater than the $50 application fee for two consecutive years, and the cost figure is approved by the Joint Budget Oversight Committee or its successor. The act would take effect on the first day of the seventh month after enactment.
