If voters approve the amendment, a three-member commission would set policy for and direct New Mexico’s state child welfare agency. Members would need qualifications set by law.
The proposed amendment would create a commission to set policy for and direct the state child welfare agency. The governor, House speaker, and Senate president pro tempore would each appoint one commission member. Members would serve staggered six-year terms; the original appointing leader would fill a vacancy for the rest of the term. A member could be removed for misconduct or neglect, with the state Supreme Court having sole authority to hear the removal case. The amendment would take effect only if voters approve it. Members would need education and experience qualifications set by law. The proposal would go to voters at the next general election or an earlier special election called for that purpose.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
