New Jersey would offer eligible public defender clients voluntary teams that handle criminal defense and help them access counseling, housing support, and other services.
Every regional public defender office would assign accepted clients a lawyer and support staff to help them access services. Clients would choose whether to join.
The Public Defender would pair lawyers with support staff in every regional office. Clients would need acceptance under the Public Defender’s eligibility rules. Participation would be voluntary and would supplement criminal defense. Talks with non-lawyer advocates would stay private unless release is specifically authorized to help secure services or accommodations. These requirements would start on the first day of the fourth month following enactment.
