People convicted or pleading guilty in Mecklenburg County would pay $2 toward law enforcement officers’ emergency pensions, with an exception for certain minor traffic offenses.
Mecklenburg County courts would charge $2 on covered convictions and guilty pleas to fund officers’ emergency pensions. Certain minor traffic offenses would be exempt, and multiple convictions would carry only one fee.
Court clerks would collect a $2 fee and send it to the board that manages emergency pensions for Mecklenburg County law enforcement officers. The fee would cover criminal convictions and guilty pleas in Mecklenburg County courts, except justice-of-the-peace courts. The fee would not apply to motor vehicle traffic offenses whose legal punishment is no more than a $50 fine or 30 days in jail. When a defendant is convicted on more than one charge, the fee would apply to only one conviction. If enacted, the bill would take effect October 1, 2026, and apply to court bills for covered convictions or guilty pleas occurring on or after that date.
