Under the law's approval rules, Horn Lake may tax overnight hotel and motel stays to fund tourism and economic development until July 1, 2030.
Horn Lake may charge up to $2 per overnight hotel or motel room rental under the law's approval rules. This authority ends starting July 1, 2030.
The law sets July 1, 2030, as the date when Horn Lake's hotel and motel tax authority ends. The tax covers overnight hotel and motel room rentals in Horn Lake. It excludes day meetings without overnight lodging, medical care facilities, and lodging run by hospitals or clinics exclusively for patients and their families. Before first imposing the tax, the city must hold an election and receive approval from at least 60% of voters who vote. The reprinted 2018 continuation process requires a city resolution and public notice. A timely petition from 20% of qualified city voters or 1,500 voters, whichever is less, triggers an election requiring 60% approval. The city must use the money for tourism and economic development. The tax excludes food, telephone, laundry, beverages, and similar charges. The law takes effect upon passage. The law authorizing the tax is repealed starting July 1, 2030.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
