The proposal would let Southaven keep authority to tax restaurant sales through July 1, 2030, while leaving the choice to impose or continue the tax to the city.
The proposal would keep Southaven’s authority to tax restaurant sales in place until July 1, 2030. The city would still choose whether to use the authority.
The proposal would extend the date when Southaven’s restaurant-tax law is repealed. The authority covers sales of drinks and prepared food at Southaven restaurants, generally places serving 25 or more people. Schools, hospitals, and nursing homes are excluded. The bill died in committee, so the proposed extension did not take effect. The city may choose whether to levy or continue the tax. Continuing it requires a city resolution and public notice; a petition from enough qualified voters can require an election, where 60% must approve the tax. The printed text says the law would be repealed from and after July 1, 2030.
