The proposal would have Massachusetts vehicle owners display number plates at the rear, while a related edit changes a law’s reference from two plates to one.
The proposed replacement section says registered vehicles and trailers would display their number at the rear, and trailers would have one rear plate. A related edit changes a reference from two plates to one.
Registered vehicles would display a number plate at the rear; registered trailers would have one plate at the rear. This applies to motor vehicles and trailers registered in Massachusetts while they are operated on a Massachusetts road. The plate must be clean, legible, and unobscured. When lights are required, the number must be lit so it can be seen from 60 feet. If a plate is lost or mutilated, or its number becomes illegible, the owner or person in control must apply for a replacement. The registrar must issue a permit for a temporary plate until the regular plate is made and delivered. Vehicles registered in Massachusetts and elsewhere may display plates from both places if the Massachusetts plate is displayed as required. A vehicle or trailer may be operated from noon on its registration expiration date until noon the next day if that day begins the new registration period and it displays a number for either period.
