Moss Point could levy up to a 2% restaurant tax for tourism, parks and recreation if voters approve it. The proposed authorization would run through July 1, 2030.
Moss Point city officials could levy a tax of up to 2% on prepared food sold by restaurants. The rule covers restaurants in Moss Point, including hotel and motel dining rooms, but excludes facilities serving schools, hospitals, clinics and nursing homes. The tax would support tourism, parks and recreation in the city. Voters would have to approve the tax in a referendum, with at least 60% of participating qualified electors voting in favor. Restaurants would add and collect the tax when customers pay, when practicable. The text says the authorization would be repealed from and after July 1, 2030. If approved, collection could begin on the first day of the second month after the referendum.
