Missouri law requires owners to make covered underground facilities detectable, with exceptions for some sewer facilities and facilities electronic equipment can find.
Owners must ensure covered underground facilities have a detectable location device, unless electronic equipment can find them from above ground. Storm sewers and deeper sanitary sewer mains and laterals are exempt.
Underground facility owners must ensure covered facilities have a detectable location device. This covers new and active underground facilities installed on real property, subject to the sewer exceptions. A location device is not required if the facility can be detected from above ground with an electronic locating device. Storm sewers are exempt at any depth. Sanitary sewer mains and laterals are exempt when installed more than six feet deep. This applies to covered facilities installed after August 28, 2026.
