What it does
A commission will study Maine's condominium and other community ownership associations if enough approved outside funding arrives within 30 days. It must report its findings and recommendations by December 1, 2026.
Argument forThe study could help lawmakers consider better rules by reviewing state laws, court cases, and how other states address community association problems.
Argument againstThe study could be stopped before it begins if enough approved outside contributions are not received within 30 days.
More detail
The law provides for a commission to study Maine's community ownership associations and report its findings and recommendations. The 12 members include lawmakers and representatives of legal, real estate, municipal, lending, and community ownership groups. The commission may not meet or incur expenses unless enough contributions to fully fund the study are received within 30 days after the resolve takes effect. The Legislative Council must approve all funding under its policies. Appointments are due within 30 days after the resolve takes effect. The report is due by December 1, 2026.
