Maine sends $4 million in earnings to county jail costs
Maine directs $4 million in investment earnings to counties for jail costs in fiscal year 2025–26, before earnings are credited to the state budget reserve.
1
What it does
The State Controller directs $4 million in investment earnings to a state fund for distribution to counties to help pay county jail operating costs.
Argument forThe $4 million may help counties cover jail operating costs with money from state fund earnings.
Argument againstUsing these investment earnings for jail costs could leave less money available for the Maine Budget Stabilization Fund.
More detail
The State Controller must credit $4 million in investment earnings to the County Jail Operations Fund for distribution to counties. The money is for county jail operating costs. The money comes from investment earnings on the Maine Budget Stabilization Fund. The credit applies in fiscal year 2025–26, before any investment earnings are credited to the Maine Budget Stabilization Fund. The law took effect when the Governor approved it on April 16, 2026.
