Maine removes anabolic steroid records from prescription monitoring program
Maine’s health department must remove existing anabolic steroid records from its prescription monitoring program when the law takes effect.
1
What it does
The law’s definition of controlled substances covered by the monitoring program excludes anabolic steroids.
The health department must remove existing information about anabolic steroid prescriptions and dispensing from the monitoring program.
The law provides $62,000 for database maintenance and a one-time $15,000 payment to remove the records.
Argument forExcluding anabolic steroids and removing their records could reduce the information providers and pharmacies report to the monitoring program.
Argument againstRemoving these records could leave health officials with less information about past anabolic steroid prescribing and dispensing.
More detail
The law excludes anabolic steroids from the controlled substances covered by the prescription monitoring program. The definition covers controlled substances in federal Schedules II through V, except anabolic steroids.
The Department of Health and Human Services must remove existing information about anabolic steroid prescribing and dispensing from the program’s records. The records are those in Maine’s Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program. The removal is due immediately when the law takes effect.
The law provides state funding for database maintenance and a one-time records purge. The funding is for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Behavioral Health. The funding is listed for fiscal year 2026–27.
