If passed, the bill would let certain Stockbridge firefighters keep working past 65 if able, while ending retirement deductions for their town service after that age.
Certain Stockbridge firefighters could serve past age 65, up to age 70, if they remain able to do the job. They would stop earning retirement or pension deductions for town service after 65.
Stockbridge could allow certain firefighters to serve past age 65. This applies to call firefighters, volunteer firefighters, and fire engineers who would face mandatory retirement at 65 and, if they belong to the retirement system, are retired for superannuation. The worker must be mentally and physically able to perform the job. The town may require a medical exam by a physician it accepts, at the worker’s expense. Retirement or pension deductions may not be taken from regular pay for town service after age 65. The bill would take effect upon passage. Continued service could last until age 70, retirement, or non-reappointment, whichever comes first.
