The proposal would have sent legislative property tax exemptions to Kansas voters for approval starting in 2027, if lawmakers advanced it and voters approved the amendment.
If the amendment were approved, Kansas voters would have to approve legislative property tax exemptions before they could take effect.
The proposed amendment would require voters to approve property tax exemptions provided by the legislature. The rule would cover property tax exemptions provided by the legislature under this section. The legislature could submit an exemption question with the affirmative vote of a majority of all members elected to each house. The amendment would need approval by two-thirds of each legislative house to be submitted to voters, then approval by Kansas voters to take effect. The voter approval rule would apply to exemptions on and after January 1, 2027. Approval would come at the next general election, unless lawmakers call a special election sooner.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
