What it does
Local units served by volunteer fire departments must pay active, participating members at least $250 a year for clothing and $250 a year for using a personal car on duty. A contract cannot remove these payments.
Argument forVolunteer firefighters could get help paying for clothing and for using their own cars while on duty.
Argument againstLocal units may need to spend more on these required allowances, leaving less money for other local needs.
More detail
Local units must pay each covered firefighter a clothing allowance and an allowance for using a personal car on duty. This applies to each active, participating member of a volunteer fire department served by a local government unit. The section removes the prior contract exception to the unit's duty to pay these allowances. The section takes effect July 1, 2026; each allowance is paid per year.
