Starting July 1, 2026, Indiana law defines microneedling and lets the agency request training proof; later provisions cover electrology licenses and shared service rooms.
The law includes microneedling in the esthetician definition. Providers must show advanced training or certification if the agency asks.
Cosmetologists and estheticians applying for an electrologist license must meet the listed requirements, including 600 combined hours of education and experience.
The board must amend rules to allow esthetics and electrology services in the same room at different times and require 600 combined hours for electrology training.
The law defines microneedling as an esthetician practice and requires providers to give the agency proof of advanced training or certification if asked. Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure using fine needles to make tiny skin punctures 0.3 to 2 millimeters deep. The definition excludes work done to treat illness or disease, by students, without pay, or as part of a cosmetics sale. A person is not included solely for threading or natural hair braiding if they do none of the listed esthetician practices. These provisions take effect July 1, 2026.
The law lists cosmetologist and esthetician licenses among the credentials an electrologist license applicant must hold, along with other requirements. These requirements apply to people applying for an electrologist license. Applicants must complete the required combined 600 hours of education and experience, pass the board's exam, meet discipline requirements, and pay the license fee. A person who does not pass the exam may take it again without more electrology study. These provisions take effect July 1, 2027.
The law directs the state board to amend rules allowing esthetics and electrology services in the same room at different times and requiring 600 combined hours of electrology education and experience. The rule changes cover rooms used for esthetics and electrology services and training for electrology. Esthetics and electrology services may not take place in the shared room at the same time. The board must amend the rules by June 30, 2027. This section expires July 1, 2028.
