Indiana would pay extra 2026 checks to eligible retired or disabled teachers and public employees, their survivors, enforcement plan members and their survivors, and state police recipients.
Teachers and public employees with at least five years of service, or their survivors, would get $150 to $450 if the member retired or became disabled by December 1, 2025, and the recipient qualifies for monthly benefits on July 1, 2026.
Eligible state police recipients would get an extra payment, as would enforcement plan members or their survivors. Retirement cutoffs apply, and recipients must qualify for monthly benefits on September 1, 2026.
Enforcement plan members who retire after June 30, 2026, could choose smaller retirement payments so a person they name receives payments for life after they die.
State pension reserve accounts would pay eligible teachers and public employees, or their survivors, an extra amount. This covers members of Indiana’s teacher and public employee retirement funds, plus eligible survivors and beneficiaries. The member must have at least five years of service. Payments range from $150 to $450 based on years of service. The recipient must be entitled to a monthly benefit on July 1, 2026. The payment would not raise the monthly pension. Members must have retired or become disabled on or before December 1, 2025. Payments would be due by October 1, 2026.
The enforcement plan reserve and state police trust fund would pay eligible recipients an amount based on a trooper’s annual pension. This covers eligible state police pension recipients and members of Indiana’s excise police, gaming, and conservation enforcement retirement plan, including eligible survivors of plan members. The payment equals 1% of a reference trooper’s annual pension. The state police systems use 20 or 25 years of service for that reference. Enforcement plan members must have retired or become disabled on or before July 2, 2025. State police recipients must have done so before July 2, 2025. Recipients must qualify for monthly benefits on September 1, 2026. Payments would be due by October 1, 2026.
Enforcement plan members would be allowed to choose smaller retirement payments paired with payments to a named survivor. This choice covers members of Indiana’s excise police, gaming, and conservation enforcement retirement plan. The survivor would receive the full reduced amount, two-thirds, or half for life, as the worker chooses. If the worker dies before retiring, the named person may receive survivor benefits only if separately eligible. The choice would apply to members who retire after June 30, 2026. If the named person dies before retirement, the choice ends and the member may name someone else.
