Idaho law allows prosecutions for listed serious crimes without deadlines
Idaho prosecutors can bring charges for specified killings, sexual crimes, and acts of terrorism without a deadline for starting the case.
1
What it does
Prosecutors have no deadline to start cases for the listed serious crimes. These cover certain killings, sexual crimes, and acts of terrorism.
Argument forHaving no filing deadline could let prosecutors pursue listed serious crimes when victims come forward or evidence emerges many years later.
Argument againstCases brought many years later could make defending against charges harder because witnesses may forget details and evidence may disappear.
More detail
Prosecutors can start criminal cases for the listed crimes without a time limit. The list covers murder, voluntary manslaughter, specified rape offenses, specified sexual abuse and lewd conduct involving children, producing or making sexually exploitative material, and specified acts of terrorism. Only the crimes listed in this section, as defined by the laws it references, receive this treatment. The law took effect on July 1, 2026.
