Idaho insurers may invest outside listed categories within a 10% total asset cap and a 5% cap for one investment or company group.
1
What it does
Insurers may put up to 10% of their assets into loans or investments outside listed categories, unless Idaho law bars them. A single investment or company group is limited to 5% of assets.
Argument forPermission to invest outside listed categories could help insurers choose investments that fit their needs, while the asset cap limits their exposure.
Argument againstInvestments outside listed categories could expose insurers to losses, even with limits on total holdings and investments in one company group.
More detail
Insurers may make loans or investments outside specifically approved categories within a total cap of 10% of their assets. These rules cover insurers' investments outside listed categories. A company group includes an entity, its affiliates, and its subsidiaries, identified by the first six digits of a security identification number called a CUSIP. Idaho law must not prohibit these loans or investments or make them ineligible. A single investment or company group cannot exceed 5% of the insurer's assets. Insurers must keep a separate record of all investments acquired under this section. The law took effect on July 1, 2026.
