1
What it does
After an eviction, Hawaii’s housing authority could sell or discard belongings it has stored if they remain unclaimed after 14 days. This would start July 1, 2050, if enacted.
Argument forThe 14-day rule could limit how long the housing authority pays to store unclaimed belongings.
Argument againstA 14-day cutoff could leave evicted people without belongings they could not retrieve in time.
More detail
Hawaii’s housing authority could sell or otherwise dispose of stored belongings. This covers belongings of an evicted person and others who use the home through that person. The authority must have moved and stored the belongings after an eviction. It could dispose of them only if they remain unclaimed after 14 days. If enacted, the measure would take effect July 1, 2050.
