A recipient may notify the commission that they will finish their required practice years in the same rural area after finding new employment or starting and maintaining a new practice. This applies to recipients who agreed to practice full time in a veterinary shortage area or rural service commitment area. The recipient must follow commission rules. The recipient may request a waiver to complete the required practice years in another rural area. The agreement requires four consecutive years of full-time practice after the recipient enters it.
A recipient may subtract qualifying program loan repayments from income when calculating taxable income. The recipient must fulfill the veterinary practice commitment under the law and program agreement. The subtraction is limited to $15,000 per tax year, $60,000 across all tax years, or the outstanding eligible loan balance, whichever is lowest.
