Starting January 1, 2027, Alabama school boards must display approved posters in certain classrooms and school common areas if donated money or displays are available.
Alabama school boards must display a poster about the Ten Commandments and American founding documents in certain classrooms and school common areas, if donated money or displays are available.
Local boards of education must display a poster or framed document with the Ten Commandments and specified historical information. Displays are required in every fifth- through twelfth-grade classroom where United States history is routinely taught, and in an entryway or other common area at each school. The common-area rule does not apply to schools serving only kindergarten through fourth grade. The requirement applies only if the State Superintendent determines that donated money or displays are available; boards do not have to use their own funds. The display must be at least 11 by 14 inches, use a design approved by the State Superintendent, and include the required text, including a statement that students and families may make their own choices about faith. The law takes effect October 1, 2026. Boards must begin displaying posters on January 1, 2027.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
