The resolution authorizes and asks the University of South Alabama to assess federal maintenance dredging in Mobile Bay. The assessment covers environmental effects of the federal maintenance dredging program in Mobile Bay and its disposal methods. The study must review published research and data from government agencies, universities, and nonprofit groups. It must examine short-term effects, long-term effects on habitats and wildlife, and the effects of different ways to dispose of dredged material. It must identify research gaps and suggest ways to reduce harm. The University is encouraged, but not required, to study economic risks of failing to maintain authorized channel depth and width, including effects on tourism and seafood. The Stokes School may conduct limited, targeted field surveys to address research gaps. The study must be completed within one year after its official start. Its results must be accessible to the Speaker of the Alabama House of Representatives.
