Starting October 1, 2026, qualifying veterans with permanent and total disabilities would no longer need to renew or verify their homestead tax exemption each year.
After first qualifying, veterans with a VA-determined permanent and total disability would no longer need to file or verify their homestead exemption every year. The exemption would end at death or when they establish a new homestead.
Qualifying veterans would not have to file an annual homestead exemption claim or verify eligibility after first qualifying. This applies to veterans of the United States Armed Forces whom the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has found permanently and totally disabled and who qualify under the listed Alabama homestead exemption laws. The veteran must first qualify for the homestead exemption. The exemption continues only while the veteran remains alive and keeps the same homestead. The provision would take effect on October 1, 2026. The release from annual verification would end immediately when the qualifying veteran dies or establishes a new homestead.
