Municipalities could approve property tax breaks for eligible volunteer firefighters and emergency medical workers who serve locally and own and live permanently in their homes.
Municipalities could choose full or partial property tax breaks for homes that certified or licensed local emergency volunteers own and live in permanently. No more than two exemptions could apply to one property.
Municipalities could pass a local law granting full or partial property tax exemptions for eligible volunteers’ homes. Residents must own and live permanently in the home and volunteer in the same municipality as firefighters, emergency medical workers, or mobile intensive care paramedics. Volunteer firefighters must be certified by the Department of Public Safety. Volunteer emergency medical workers and mobile intensive care paramedics must meet state certification or licensing requirements. If multiple people qualify for the same property, no more than two exemptions may be granted. If the bill becomes law, it would take effect immediately. Each municipality would still need to pass a local law to grant exemptions.
