If it becomes law, this bill would require the Secretary of the Interior to study whether a Monterey Bay National Heritage Area makes sense, but it would not create the area itself.
The Interior Secretary would study, with state, local, Tribal, and nonprofit input, whether the Monterey Bay area should become a National Heritage Area.
The study would cover four California counties and any nearby California areas with similar heritage.
The Secretary of the Interior must study whether designating the area as the Monterey Bay National Heritage Area is suitable and feasible. The Secretary must consult with the State of California, local groups and governments, Tribal governments, nonprofits, and other appropriate entities, including the Monterey Bay Economic Partnership. The study must follow section 120103(a) of title 54, United States Code. The bill orders a study only. It does not designate the heritage area.
The study area includes Monterey, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and San Luis Obispo counties in California. It also includes any other California area with similar heritage aspects that is next to or near those counties.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
