Teachers with at least 15 years of experience at the elementary, middle, or high school level can meet principal certificate requirements through a year-long state program, if they complete it successfully.
The law lets a teacher meet principal certificate requirements through 15 years of teaching and a year-long state program. The route covers elementary, middle, and high school principal certificates. Teaching experience must be at the same school level as the certificate sought. The teacher must successfully complete a program developed and administered by the West Virginia Department of Education. The program must ensure the teacher demonstrates skill in school administration, including leading instruction, managing school finances and staff, handling student discipline, and understanding school law. These certificate requirements apply beginning July 1, 2026.
No hearings or votes scheduled.
