Vermont charges electric vehicles based on miles driven
Electric vehicle owners and lessees pay a fee based on miles driven, with credits for certain earlier charges and first reporting periods beginning in 2027.
1
What it does
Electric vehicle owners and lessees pay 1.4 cents per mile, up to $178 a year. Credits depend on when they renew: an earlier one-time road charge or the most recent infrastructure fee may count toward the amount due.
People who violate a bridge posting or closure may be fined up to $1,000.
Transportation grants may be as large as $600,000, or $1.2 million in fiscal year 2027. Sand and salt shed projects receive extra weight, and half of grant money need not be reserved for environmental mitigation.
Argument forLarger grants could help towns fund transportation projects, while extra weight for sand and salt sheds may support winter road work.
Argument againstElectric vehicle owners and lessees could owe mileage fees, and the credits may depend on when they renew or begin reporting miles.
More detail
Electric vehicle owners and lessees pay a fee based on miles driven. The program covers electric vehicles registered in Vermont. The fee is 1.4 cents per mile, up to $178 per year. Those who renew before their first reporting period ends pay a one-time charge of $89 for a one-year registration or $178 for a two-year registration; that charge counts toward the fee. If they renew after the first reporting period, the most recent electric vehicle infrastructure fee counts toward the fee. Currently registered vehicles begin their first reporting period at their annual inspection in 2027. Newly registered vehicles begin when registered in Vermont.
People who violate a bridge posting or closure may be fined. This applies to people who violate a bridge posting or closure. The fine may be up to $1,000.
The Transportation Alternatives Grant Program provides grants of up to $600,000, with a higher temporary limit for fiscal year 2027. The grants support transportation projects. The program gives extra weight to sand and salt shed projects. Half of grant funds no longer have to be reserved for environmental mitigation projects. The $1.2 million maximum applies only in fiscal year 2027.
