The commissioners would consult education and community groups while preparing recommendations, and the education department would post the guidance online within a year.
The education and health commissioners would prepare guidance for schools on supporting students who fast for religious or medical reasons. It would recommend ways to address school activities, instruction, and family communication.
The education commissioner must develop and share guidance with public schools, working with the health commissioner. The guidance covers students fasting for religious or medical reasons. It must address school activities, alternative activities when fasting affects physical activity, academic standing and access to instruction, family communication, and staff resources. The guidance must recommend ways to help students; it does not require schools to provide any particular accommodation. This section does not let schools change state graduation requirements unless another law or a student's individualized education program allows it. Accommodations cannot keep students from meeting local graduation requirements or require extra schoolwork or instructional time for that purpose. The act would take effect immediately. The Department of Education would have to post the guidance online within one year after it takes effect.
