Montana’s proposal would restrict hunters’ use of electronic tracking devices and same-day sharing of animal locations, while exempting collars on hunting dogs.
The proposal would restrict hunters’ use of electronic devices that track animal or bird movement. A radio-tracking collar on a dog used for lawful hunting would be exempt.
The proposed amendment would restrict using certain electronic tracking devices while hunting or on a calendar day a person plans to hunt or has hunted. The provision refers to tracking information about game animals, fur-bearing animals, upland game birds, and migratory game birds. A person could not share an animal’s or bird’s location to help someone hunt on the same calendar day they used a tracking device to locate it. A radio-tracking collar on a dog used in lawful hunting would not count as a motion-tracking device under this provision. The proposal says it would take effect on passage and approval, but it died in committee.
